What is a hairdressing apprenticeship?

Hairdressing apprenticeships provide the opportunity to develop the practical skills required to become a qualified hairdresser. Apprenticeships have been devised mainly to help young people gain relevant essential skills in a chosen field, whilst earning a salary. An apprenticeship in hairdressing will usually involve working in a hairdressing salon for 2 or 3 days a week and attending college for the other 2 or 3 days of the week.

How long do hairdressing apprenticeships take?

A Hairdressing apprenticeship can last for anything from 36 weeks up to 5 years, so requires a lot of determination, commitment and most importantly a real love of hairdressing.

Hairdressing Apprenticeship NVQ Levels

NVQ level 1: The NVQ level 1 in hairdressing is aimed at students who are not yet 16 and are therefore unable to apply for an apprenticeship. The NVQ level 1 gives students the chance to assist staff in a working salon and encompasses basic skills such as, Shampoo and hair conditioning, straightening, curling, reception duties, plaiting and health & safety.

NVQ level 2: Following the NVQ level 1, the NVQ level 2 provides more in-depth training of the areas covered in level 1 plus the addition of more advance d skills including, cutting techniques, hair colouring, hair styling and client consultations.

NVQ level 3: The NVQ level 3 or Advanced apprenticeship in hairdressing is for those who have completed the NVQ 2 and wish to further develop their skills to go on and undertake roles with more responsibility such as 'senior stylist'. Training can consist of the following more advance skills, colour correction, permed effects, dressing long hair, hair extensions and creative styling.

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship in hairdressing enables you to earn a salary (be it a small salary) while gaining the necessary NVQ qualification to become a qualified hairdresser. Undertaking an apprenticeship also shows a commitment to learning which is an asset which many salon managers/owners find appealing when looking for a potential hairdressing employee.

What are the entry requirements for hairdressing apprenticeships?

There are no specific entry requirements to apply for a NVQ level 1 in hairdressing, although certain apprenticeship providers state that it is desirable for applicants to have GCSE English plus at least one other GCSE. To apply for a NVQ level 2, you must also be able to find work in a salon and be at least 16 years of age. If applying for an NVQ level 3 you must have completed NVQ level 2 in hairdressing.
